Patch 0.2.1: Labours, Cerberus and a smoother game

Patch 0.2.1 adds Labours, a ladder of twelve harder rules for solo games, and a Relaxed difficulty for an easier game. It also brings Cerberus, a shop that works the same everywhere, healing from your hand, and a lot of smoothing so the game hitches less.

In this update

New: Labours and Difficulty

Before a game, the Summary page now asks for a Difficulty and, in solo games, a Labour.

The Summary page with the Difficulty choice and the Labour picker

  • Normal is the game as it was.
  • Relaxed lowers the cities by 2 levels, and Undo works even after something new is revealed. Relaxed games don't count for the leaderboards, Ironman or Labours, and some achievements can't be earned in them.
  • Labours go from I to XII. Each one adds a rule and keeps every rule below it.
  • Win a conquest with a hero to open Labour I for that hero. Win at your highest Labour to open the next.
  • Each Labour adds 10% to your leaderboard score. A win at Labour XII counts 2.2 times.
  • The weekly race is now played on Normal with two Labours picked for that week. Everyone plays the same two, with no score bonus.

The twelve Labours

  • I. Start at −2 Zeus' Law.
  • II. The gods' meters need 120 instead of 100.
  • III. One Favour fewer in Olympus.
  • IV. Cities are one level higher.
  • V. Start with a Wound in your deck.
  • VI. Marauder Camps and Beasts get +1 Armour.
  • VII. Strongholds and Oracles get +1 Armour.
  • VIII. Cities are one more level higher.
  • IX. Marauder Camps and Beasts get +1 on every attack.
  • X. Companions cost 1 more Coin.
  • XI. You are knocked out one Wound sooner.
  • XII. Another Favour fewer in Olympus.
  • Five new achievements for the Labours: The Nemean Lion (win at Labour I), The Augean Stables (V), The Cattle of Geryon (X), Cerberus (XII) and Apotheosis (Labour XII with all four heroes).

Enemies, Places and Voices

  • The lair has a new look. On the map it is a magenta crag with a cave mouth and pink crystals. Its fight stands before a deep cave lit by glowing crystals.

  • Cerberus takes the fire beast's place in Beasts camps, Barrows and Ruins. Three heads, a hide cracked like cooling lava, and fire at his paws. Meet him and the Hound of Hades here.
  • Cerberus's side heads now have necks, so from behind they no longer float beside his shoulders.
  • The Hound of Hades barks, bites, yelps and howls in time with its moves, and shakes out its chainmail while it waits.
  • The goblin camps talk back. A goblin shouts at Medea when a fight starts, jeers if you take a long time, and cheers when his blow wounds you. Walking next to a goblin camp can draw a jeer too.
  • Medea's fight line now starts on the war drum, and her lines are evened out so none is much louder than the rest.
  • Settings has a new Voices slider for your hero and the enemies who talk back, separate from effects and music.

God Powers

  • Zeus' Law now shows how many Coins it adds: under the arrow on its track, and under your Coins in the Market. At +3 Zeus' Law that is +2 Coins.

  • Athena can now also reroll a Favour you already used this turn. It goes back to Olympus. Taking it again still needs another use.
  • Undo after cashing in with Ares now puts his tab back the way it was.

Card Changes

  • Turn the Favour: a Favour you Attune now keeps its colour when a new round starts instead of being rerolled. New text: "Turn a Favour to a colour the card allows and take it. It stays that colour next turn, even in a new round."
  • The Unfailing Spring: destroying it now lets you pick a gold or a black Boon. A gold Blessing in a fight asks for its colour straight away. Its card text now says exactly what it does.

Your Hand and Your Turn

  • Play a card sideways by dragging it. Drag a card out of your hand and scroll the mouse wheel to turn it. Let go on the map or the fight table and it is played sideways for 1.
  • Healing from your hand. With Healing to spend, click a Wound in your hand to heal it. The Wound card rises out of your hand as it goes.
  • A clicked Wound rising out of the hand

    • Heal and Learn now sit on the End Turn ring when you can use them. They slide in, glow gold and keep nudging you until you use them. End Turn stays blue while a Wound can still be healed.

    • Collect Reward no longer ends your turn. Take your reward, keep playing, and press End Turn when you are done.
    • After you buy, hire or learn something at a place, the End Turn button turns green, even with Coins left over.
    • Every choice you can't close now has a HIDE button under it, like the Relic already had: Spell, Feat and Companion rewards, Blessing and Boon picks, the War-Horn, Foresee and Reforge. HIDE shows the map and your hand, and SHOW at the top brings the choice back.
    • Clicking a temple from a distance now walks you there.
    • After ruins, the rewards now come one at a time: the win plate, then your Spell, Feat or Companion pick, then the level-up.

    Companions

    • Clicking a Companion always opens its menu, even when it has only one thing to do or has already acted. You pick the ability; it is never used for you. Abilities you can't use right now show dark, with a lock.

    • Odysseus: after hiring a level 1 Companion you can now hire a level 2 too. The level 1 moves to his extra slot, so nobody has to leave. The same goes after a level up.
    • Odysseus' extra slot now shows Athena's owl. A level 1 Companion sitting in it wears a small owl coin. After a level up, the new slot opens instead of staying locked.

    • The Outriders no longer Scout. Instead they can draw 1 card, at any time on your turn.

    The Market

    • Market and Trade now open the same shop. Where you can buy, the Market banner turns teal and the shop shows only what that place sells.
    • Your hero, Skills and god meters stay usable while the Market is open.

    Combat

    • Look at the map during a fight. Press the MAP tab at the top right, or M. Press FIGHT, M or Esc to go back. Nothing in the fight changes.

Switching from the fight to the map and back

    • An enemy that is Garrisoned itself and stands behind a keep's or oracle's walls now shows two castle marks, on the map and in the fight. No attack reaches it in the Ranged phase, not even Siege. A keep's or oracle's other defenders now show the walls' castle on the map too.

    • The Attack/Block list now opens on top of the deck piles, not behind them.
    • The small Skip button stays available when the End Turn button also says Skip.

    Settings and Languages

    • The picture beside the Graphics settings is now split in two: your map on top and a small fight below. You see what each setting does to both before you press Apply. Combat blur shows there too.

The Graphics settings with the map and fight preview

    • The Low graphics setting now draws lighter for weak laptops.
    • In Russian, the carved capital lettering now uses a matching Russian typeface instead of plain book type.
    • Translated text reads better. Colours agree with their word ("eine rote Gabe", "красный Дар"), Turkish capitals keep their dots (YENİ OYUN), and the Skills label is no longer cut off in Dutch, German or French.
    • Temple Seers and Temple Shields show their mana stone in every language.
    • The After Troy icon now shows on the Windows taskbar.

    Smoother Play

A lot of small freezes are gone, most of all on laptops.

    • The first time the game starts (and after an update), it prepares its graphics for a few seconds behind the loading card. Fights stutter much less after that.
    • The first attack in each fight no longer stutters.
    • The map and fights do less hidden drawing every frame.
    • Playing a card, ending your turn, resting and drawing new cards hitch less.
    • Levelling up, hiring a Companion and using a Companion no longer freeze the screen for a moment. Neither does a bot choosing its level-up reward.
    • The autosave after each turn no longer freezes the game, and the corner menu opens without a pause.

    Bug Fixes

    • Skipping through ruins rewards no longer stacks them, and the reward pick no longer opens twice.
    • Undo back into a fight now puts the camera back on the fight. It could be left up in the trees, or pointed at empty grass.
    • Undoing a kill puts the enemy's shield and attack numbers back over his head.
    • Quitting the game right as a new card is shown, for example just after a bot takes a Skill, no longer crashes it.
